Pangaea and Pannikin connect, deliver fresh new energy to Flower Hill
Del Mar’s go-to gift shoppe moves in, makes magic with beloved coffeehouse
Pangaea Outpost, one of Del Mar’s premier merchant marketplaces, has just opened its doors in a brand new location at Flower Hill Promenade—and is now physically connected to Pannikin Coffee & Tea. The coming together of these two local favorites creates an energetic new atmosphere at Flower Hill, and gives patrons of both businesses another reason to keep coming back.
The marketplace’s new digs are much more earthy and edgy than Pangaea’s previous home. The new space sports distressed hardwood floors, brightly colored walls, and an artistically painted register counter.. Regardless of the fixtures, though, customers can still expect to find the same caliber of art, jewelry, clothing, accessories and gifts that Pangaea has always carried.
Pangaea’s manager, Susan Burland, proposed the idea of relocating the store to Flower Hill’s owners last year after the Book Works announced their plans to close. Burland was inspired to take advantage of this opportunity after an experience she had at a car wash in San Jose. “I visited this new car wash that had a gift shop in the waiting lounge. It gave me something to do while I waited, and as a result I now prefer to have my car washed there when I'm in the area,” she explains. “Similarly, Pannikin’s patrons now have something to do while their beans are being ground or while they’re waiting for a delicious lunch. And Pangaea shoppers now get to enjoy exquisitely brewed coffees and teas while they shop. I believe both businesses with benefit greatly from this synergy.”
“All of the best coffee shops create their own kind of energy,” says Burland, “and in this case that energy flows over into a gift shop.” Burland goes on to explain how the blend of these two businesses marks something different for Del Marians. “The new Pangaea is not your typical Flower Hill shop by any means. The walls are covered with bright colors and the vibe is much more lively in here. It’s a casual marketplace but with some luxurious items you won’t find anywhere else.”
